PREVENTION SPECIALIST
Purpose Statement
The job of Prevention Specialist was established for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional program with specific responsibilities for providing information on programs/services available to students and families regarding substance abuse, prevention and intervention as well as school and/or district activities and procedures
This job reports to Superintendent.
Essential Functions
- Analyze, plan and coordinate program components.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Demonstrate competence in grant reporting.
- Effectively communicate with and facilitate communication between community groups, schools, Tribes, and other agencies.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Facilitate communication.
- Manage successful community coalition.
- Models conversation, manners, cleanup activities, listening, and everyday interactions for the for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
- Monitors students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g. lunch, bus stops, playground, classroom, field trips, public transportation, assemblies, kitchen, elective classes, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
- Prepare and manage successful grant proposals
- Recommend and implement goals and objectives for prevention services
- Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or referring to appropriate personnel.
- Responds to inquiries for the purpose of solving problems, providing information and/or referral.
- Work evenings and irregular hours to attend meetings
- Work with a variety of people, organizations and governmental agencies.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: planning and managing activities; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and utilizing standard office equipment including utilizing pertinent software applications.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: community resources and principles of a community services program; and concepts of grammar and punctuation.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather and/or collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize specific, job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: establishing and maintaining constructive relationships; adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; setting priorities; and working flexible hours.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under moderate supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; providing information and/or advising others; and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to affect the organization’s services. Collection of end-of-school-year data on most students served is required and submitted to supervisor.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 60% sitting, 20% walking, and 20% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and in a generally hazard free environment. There is a daily usage of computer to enter ongoing information regarding services provided.
