TRANSPORTATION COORDINATOR

 

Purpose Statement

The job of Transportation Coordinator was established for the purpose/s of supervising student transportation services and activities; overseeing assigned personnel; providing information to others; and scheduling work assignments.

This job is distinguished from similar jobs by the following characteristics: support systems required to meet the transportation operation scheduling demands; providing resource information from a variety of sources; and collecting and referring information relating to transportation system operations, providing support within the student transportation services area with specific responsibilities for monitoring the.

 

This job reports to Superintendent

 

Essential Functions

  • Assesses incidents, complaints and/or accidents for the purpose of resolving or recommending a resolution to the situation. 
  • Compiles a variety of data (e.g. incident reports, inspections, student counts, mileage, driver time, stop addresses, number of days run, bus capacity, etc.) for the purpose of developing formal reports, conveying information and complying with mandated requirements. 
  • Conducts regular inspections for the purpose of ensuring work quality, performance and production, and assuring that staff performance is meeting established standards and expectations. 
  • Evaluates routes (e.g. bus stops, clock schedules, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring bus routes are in compliance with school safety schedules, policies, and mandated guidelines and making recommendations about changes, optimization, and timing. 
  • Implements route additions, adjustments, and/or consolidations resulting from student needs (e.g. new developments, road closures, etc.) for the purpose of making efficient and safe routes. 
  • Informs school personnel and parents of practices (e.g. rules, regulations, laws, etc.) for the purpose of providing information for their follow-up action. 
  • Maintains service related files and records (e.g. mileage logs, servicing schedules and worksheets, DMV requirements, etc.) for the purpose of prioritizing routine maintenance; minimizing vehicle damage; and/or avoiding service disruptions. 
  • Participates in unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. as required for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions. 
  • Performs functions of a school bus driver for the purpose of meeting the district’s transportation service needs. 
  • Prepares a variety of materials (e.g. reports, memos, letters, procedures, manuals, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information. 
  • Provides behind the wheel and classroom training for new school bus drivers for the purpose of evaluating and reviewing bus drivers’ and applicants’ job knowledge and complying with state requirements. 
  • Responds to emergencies including after hours situations for the purpose of addressing immediate safety concerns. 
  • Responds to inquiries from students, parents, and/or staff (e.g. stop locations, schedule, state regulated policies, etc.) for the purpose of providing the necessary information regarding transportation services. 
  • Schedules work assignments (e.g. assigning drivers and routes, procuring substitutes, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring completion of transportation routes in a timely manner.
  • Supervises department personnel staff (e.g. hiring/termination recommendations, planning / scheduling / coordinating activities, training, advising, consulting, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that the department functions in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Oversees the coordination of discipline procedures and decisions of student discipline.

 

Other Functions

  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a department, large work unit, and/or across several small work units; and tracking budget expenditures. Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 75% sitting, 15% walking, and 10% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes.

 

Experience Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is desired.
